Bridge. Savvinskaya settlement by Isaac Levitan

Quiet and calm, covered with warmth and comfort – this is the picture “The Bridge. Savvinskaya settlement”, written by I. Levitan in 1884. With his brush, the inimitable master of landscape painting has once again transformed a simple sketch of ordinary village backyards into a surprisingly lyrical picture, filled with subtle poetic content.

The main character of the canvas is a simple wooden bridge paving the way for the traveler through a narrow streamlet. The day turned out to be glorious – the sun shines brightly and cordially, gently penetrating the air with its rays, the young lush greenery of the trees growing beyond the bridge rustles softly.

Behind, in the background of the picture, modest village houses were housed. Everywhere are firewood, waiting for the return of construction workers. Perfection in simplicity – the main idea that the artist brings through all his work, has been confirmed in this wonderful work.

The beauty of ordinary things Levitan emphasizes through the use of an incredibly harmonious in color to the palette of colors. The purple shadows on the bridge, the blue of the sky, shades of greenery and ocher perfectly convey a sense of the reigning serenity of the landscape and the spirituality of the master.

By the nature of the execution of the picture, the lower and upper parts differ significantly. The lower half with the “Bridge…” itself is written with energetic characteristic strokes, with a predominance of a rich and intensive palette of colors.

Levitan was always interested in the theme of the transmission of the game of color and light in water, therefore the lower part of the canvas was repeatedly refined – the artist sought to perfectly show the reflectivity of water, having achieved almost a photographic effect. The upper half is more airy and sunny, bright and light. At the same time, both parts of the picture harmoniously complement each other, giving the backyards familiar to each rural family with special charm.
