The pool by Isaac Levitan

The pool by Isaac Levitan

The painting “At the Whirlpool” was written by the author in 1892, now it belongs to the Tretyakov Gallery. Many consider this work dark and sad, which reflects anxiety and hidden despair.

Clouds, setting on the overcast sky, speak of the sadness and depressive state of the artist. The picture contains a certain mystical and mysteriousness, this is given by its narrow, hidden twilight, as well as spreading forests. They seem to come close to the viewer, and already intend to devour it with cold and dense foliage, if not for a wobbly bridge. The bushes, like balls, crept quite close to the crossing and slowly began to descend to the river.

The bridge divides the picture vertically into two parts and attracts special attention. It will not immediately become noticeable that the two sides of the bridge are very different pictures. On the left, the water is restless, dotted with many small waves that are created from strong winds and currents. On the same side, closer to the viewer, there is a dark wooden road, which ends at the pool.

On the right side, everything looks different. The water is smooth and even, like a taut drum, in the foreground you can see a piece of fertile land, overgrown with lush grass, which ends near the bridge.

A thin bridge in the form of three logs seems to separate two paths and each can choose his own path: quiet and sunny or, on the contrary, hard and exciting.
