Bathing by Boris Kustodiev

A hot sunny day, the water sparkles from the sun, mixes reflections intensely turning blue, perhaps promising a thunderstorm of sky and trees from a steep bank, as if melted on top of the sun. On the shore something is loaded into the boat. The coarsely built bathhouse is also hot with the sun; the shadow inside is light, almost does not hide the female bodies.

The picture is full of greedily, sensually perceived life, its everyday flesh. The free play of light and shadows and the sun’s reflections in the water makes one recall the interest of the mature Kustodiyev to impressionism.
