The girl on the ball by Pablo Picasso

The girl on the ball by Pablo Picasso

The most recognizable picture of the artist. In place of the aching “blue” period comes the “pink” – cheerful, lively and lyrical. Such a striking metamorphosis in the character of Picasso’s creativity was caused by her acquaintance with the green-eyed beauty Fernanda, with whom the artist will associate strong, but never-ending feelings.

In the early 1900s, Pablo Picasso became interested in the circus Medrano. He was attracted by street harlequins, gymnasts and other circus people, whose life was free, full of specific romance. By the way, the master was not original, many artists of that period felt a weakness for circus coloring.

The picture depicts a thin fragile girl, diligently trying to keep balance, standing on a small ball. Watching the girl’s success, the massive, bulky athlete strikes with a muscular back and a powerful figure.

The compositional side of the picture is solved in an amazing way – two figures balance the picture, showing an invisible, unbreakable bond. Although the views of the main characters of the canvas do not intersect, it seems that they can only exist together, they are bound by the same fate: remove the girl gymnast and the presence of a strong man will be meaningless, and remove the athlete – the girl will lose balance in that moment.

The plot of the picture is supplemented with some more figures that you can not even immediately notice, due to the bright interpretation of the main characters – this is a grazing horse and a woman with children and a dog. These characters increase the depth of the background, thereby expanding the space of the picture.

The background of the picture also raises questions for the viewer, as circus artists are somehow depicted not in the usual setting, but in the decoration of the endless steppe or desert. It is difficult to say why exactly this background was chosen by Picasso, although many researchers are inclined to see this as a hidden deep meaning.

Gamma picture has a pleasant “light” character – it is pink and blue color with beige tones. The main method of implementing the plot is the dark line. The whole “construction” of the picture is permeated with antonyms – a heavy strongman and flexible graceful girl, a cube and a ball, a detailed close foreground and the most distant rear. This famous work can be presented as a precursor of cubism – the picture is notable for an amazing combination of geometric shapes of objects and human figures.
