Domaha by Ilya Repin

Domaha by Ilya Repin

Returning in 1876 from a long trip abroad, Repin began with pleasure to write country life. Much of it was from the memories of his own childhood. Among the “rural” works of the artist we will find genre scenes, individual “Domaha” and group “Festive evening in the village” portraits.

Putting the culmination point in this series with his famous “Procession of the Cross in Kursk Province”, Repin turned to historical and “political” subjects. I. N. Kramskoy once said: “I know many artists who write, and sometimes they write very well, rural life, but none of them can be compared to Repin in skill”.
