Children in fancy dress by Boris Kustodiev

Children in fancy dress by Boris Kustodiev

Kustodiyev wrote several surprisingly vivid and colorful children’s portraits, the models for which were his children: the son Kirill and the daughter Irina. This work is distinguished by a playful character: the children here are depicted in costumes of the 18th century. In this case, we are dealing with an almost conceptual “worldly” approach.

Artists of the “World of Art” were in love with the 18th century, consciously idealizing it. A. Benoit, K. Somov and others repeatedly referred to the “noble” plots of the XVIII century. Kustodiyev on this background looks more “Russian-oriented” – his ideal world was placed in the middle of the XIX century and corresponds with another social stratum. Although, as we see, in his work there were exceptions to the rule. This is one of them.
