The Virgin and Child by Natalia Goncharova

The Virgin and Child by Natalia Goncharova

The picture is made in the spirit of Russian iconography. The artist used the traditional schemes and techniques, and at the same time, she was not bound by any framework.

The Virgin is depicted in yellow robes with brown folds. On her left hand sits an infant, whom she holds to her right. Contrary to Orthodox traditions, the child does not look at her or on the viewer. A simple blue background is filled with primitively interpreted green plants and figures of angels. The conditional interpretation of the face of the Mother of God is complemented by its unconventional coloring, which is characteristic of the rays.

The free plastic transformation of the figures of the angels and the child of Christ is supplemented by the sonority of bright colors, which distances the picture from the iconographic canons and places it at a worthy place among the achievements of like-minded people.
