The Virgin and Child by Hans Baldung

The Virgin and Child by Hans Baldung

The painting “The Virgin with the Child” was written in the late period of the artist’s work and it differs from his early compositions primarily by the lack of decorative details and a restrained color scheme.

On a dark background, a young beautiful woman, already fed the baby, thought deeply, and the baby quietly fell asleep. There is no sadness on her face, but a black background causes a premonition of anxiety. The Madonna is depicted as an earthly woman, a young mother who always worries about the fate of her child. In this interpretation of the image of the Mother of God, the influence of the great Italian artists of the Renaissance is felt. But the artist remained true to himself, he did not imitate the works of Italian masters, but created his original work.
