Two Women by Franz Marc

Two Women by Franz MarcThis picture of Franz Marc is filled with peace. The artist depicted two women who settled down to rest on the grass and chatting with each other.

You can make a lot of assumptions about who these women are. Perhaps these are two girlfriends who went for a walk and decided to relax. Or maybe this mother and daughter are discussing some family matters or secrets.

The painting takes place on the mountainside, somewhere in the background there should be a mountainous terrain, but the artist left it behind the scenes in order to fill the canvas with tranquility. It is noticeable that the artist did not specifically paid much attention to detail. The faces of women cannot be disassembled: one, hiding from the sun, covered herself with a hand, the other, telling something, turned in profile to the audience. The effect of sweepingness is inherent in the other elements of the picture: there is no clarity in the lines, only smoothness.

On the green grass stands out a bright spot blue jacket of one of the women. But green grass became the main color center of the canvas. The delicate yellow color of the women’s cap and flowers are even more outlined by the green of the grass. Such a skillful combination of warm colors gives the picture exceptional serenity.
