For the painting “The Return of the Flock” Fedor Vasilyev receives the first prize of four hundred rubles at the competition of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists. From this time, the artist appears numerous admirers. All that he does, receives positive feedback from connoisseurs of art from among the nobility. His paintings are sold like hot cakes.
Such success could easily turn the head of a young man who had just emerged from a difficult need, and direct his work to indulge the tastes of the wealthy Petersburg public, who saw in art works only a luxury item. This happened with many artists, but not with Vasilyev.
