Poplars by Fedor Vasilyev

Poplars by Fedor Vasilyev

The painting was written by Fedor Vasilyev in Ukraine in the estate of Count SG Stroganov “Hoten” shortly before his death. The composition is solved in a typical manner for the artist, with Vasilyev’s almost obligatory diagonally escaping alley, the rupture of which is fixed in the center of the picture by a small white structure.

The tragic premonition of early death was expressed in this landscape especially strongly. Contrasts of light and shadows, the alternation of horizontal plans, heavy clouds of a stormy sky with equal force reflect both the specific landscape motive and the artist’s inner sensations.
