Portrait of the British Queen Jane Seymour by Hans Holbein

The general orientation of Holbein’s interests naturally brings him closer to the circle of German humanists. In these years, the artist repeatedly painted portraits of Erasmus of Rotterdam; among them is a profile portrait of Erasmus in 1523. Holbein was one of the largest graphs of his era. His drawings are full of unfading freshness.

Especially good are numerous portrait sketches, over which he works throughout his life. By the early years are the brilliant drawings “Portrait of Paracelsus” and “Portrait of the Unknown”, made in black pencil and colored crayons. By their deep vitality and at the same time, by grace, accuracy and freedom, they can be called truly innovative.
