Vladimirka by Isaac Levitan

Vladimirka by Isaac Levitan

The famous painting called “Vladimirka” is distinguished by a significant depth of semantic content and a special poetic sadness. Today this canvas is one of the best among the landscape works of the author.

Thanks to this picture, the memory of convicts was immortalized, they were sent to Siberia to hard labor until 1890 along this road. We can see a rather gloomy landscape – the end of summer, almost bare steppe, the road going into the distance. Further freeing the place of the road, the forest makes way. The gloomy sky, low-hanging, together with the running clouds makes melancholy and evokes sad memories. The road stretches beyond the horizon, which runs off beyond the horizon.

The picture also attracts the viewer with its rich historical content and dramatic notes of poetry. As for the pictorial plan, the picture is very original. It harmoniously combines the refinement of the pattern with a variety of colorful hues: starting with pale gray colors that reflect the sky, and ending with greenish and earthy, reflecting the steppe. The author skillfully shows the alarming mood of the gloomy sky, which with a certain threat hangs over the winding steppe road. The monotonous dull landscape slightly refreshes the bright spot in the form of a church in the foreground, as well as a dark female figure. She remained standing in silent waiting not far from the roadside cross. Many difficult fate passed through this road, full of bitter feelings of melancholy and hopelessness.

The entire canvas fills the artist’s selfless love for the motherland, his genuine compassion for the grief of others, for the convicts, for their mothers and wives, who are waiting for them on the road.
