The painting “Virgin Mary with a baby in the background of the landscape” was painted by the Venetian artist Giorgione at the very beginning of the 16th century, the approximate date of creation is 1503. The size of the painting is 44 x 37 cm, wood, oil.
One of the early works of the master, the picture is a classic composition of biblical images. Already on this early work of the artist it is noticeable that nature, the natural environment in art for Giorgione begins to play an increasingly important role.
Still it is impossible to say with certainty that Giorgione depicts a single air environment connecting figures and objects of the landscape into a single open-air whole. But, in any case, one can rightfully say that the figurative emotional atmosphere in which both Giorgione’s characters and nature live, there is already an atmosphere that is optically common both for the background and for the characters of the picture.
