Tiepolo began his engraving not earlier than the 1730s and 40s, and in his legacy there are not too many works done in this technique. The artist managed to create only about 35 engraving plates – but this was enough to recognize him as one of the best engravers of his time.
On engravings of Tiepolo, we often meet groups of mysterious and picturesque figures. These are gypsies, satyrs or wizards – as, for example, on the engraving “Wizard who studies skulls.” The clarity and lightness of the line the artist borrowed from Rembrandt, whose works were very popular in Italy during the lifetime of Tiepolo. True, if Rembrandt’s engravings are executed, as a rule, in a broad and muted manner, then the engravings of Tiepolo impress with its bright, transparent atmosphere.
