In the small space of the picture are inscribed the figures of the apostles and Christ. Poses, gestures, expressions of people speak of the strong excitement of the apostles. Bassano expanded the traditional religious plot and strengthened the genre motive. However, this should not be seen as a departure from the religious understanding of the topic, but rather as a pictorial modus explaining the meaning of the picture and being in some way prophetic, ahead of its time.
The fragment clearly shows the different reaction of the apostles to the prophecy of Christ that one of them will betray him. The apostle in the foreground points to the broken bread and looks at the Savior with an open gaze. So the artist conveys the legend of the atoning sacrifice of Christ.
