The last surviving paintings of Giotto are the frescoes in the chapels of Bardi and Peruzzi in the Florentine church of Santa Croce. This is one of them. She enters the cycle consisting of seven frescoes in the chapel of Bardi and dedicated to the life of St. Francis of Assisi.
One of the legends tells how during his wanderings Saint Francis was at the Egyptian Sultan, who tried to convert from Islam to Christianity.
Wanting to prove the strength of his faith and the power of the true God, he said that he would pass through the fire if the Imams of the Sultan did the same after him. The Imams refused to repeat the feat of St. Francis, and the Sultan himself, although deeply shocked by the incident, never became a Christian.
