Summer by Giuseppe Arcimboldo

Summer by Giuseppe Arcimboldo

“Summer” opens the second half of the year. The year comes at the time of maturity, the spring flowering of youth is over. The artist depicts the age of fruiting in the image of a young woman who is no longer composed of tender spring flowers, but of summer fruits, vegetables and berries.

There is a completely different color scheme: the soft white and pink gamma of spring is replaced by saturated yellow, brown, red and orange, symbolizing the hot sun. Bright, luminous colors are emphasized by a dark background.

The cheeks of the young woman consist of a delicate peach, the nose from a vegetable marrow, the mouth from a young pea pod, the chin from a red pear, the pupil of the eye from a bright cherry, the earrings from garlic, and the hair from grapes, olives, pears, wheat ears and other gifts of summer, and the dress is woven from the ears of bread. One of the variants of the picture on the collar of the dress shows the name of the artist, and on the shoulder – the year of writing – 1573.
