St. Mark the Evangelist by Giovanni Cimabue (Chennie di Pepo)

The apse and the wide transept of the Upper Church of San Francesco are decorated with the frescoes of Cimabue. Here is an image of one of the four evangelists, written on the cross vault of the environment. On both sides of the ribs of the vault, there is a crocheted ornament with acanthus leaves painted in paints, and in the triangle formed by him is depicted the Mark of the Evangelist on the throne; he writes a book.

Before the table is depicted his constant attribute – the winged lion. To the right in each of the four triangular spaces are the kinds of cities that symbolize the four parts of the world and denote the regions of activity of the evangelists. So, next to Mark depicts the view of Rome with the inscription YTALIA “.

In the center you can find the dome of the Pantheon, next to it on the left – Torre delle Milizier. Behind them towers the Lateran basilica, whose battlements are decorated with coats of arms with the letters SPQR pointing to Ancient Rome and the coat of arms of the Orsini family. The church that stands on the right is decorated with a fresco by Deisus “on the pediment and with the bell tower – a schematic image of the old cathedral of St. Peter. In front of it is a large round fortification – the castle of Saint Angel.

The coat of arms of the Orsini family indicates that the fresco was created during the reign of the son of this name, Pope Nicholas III, who was a major patron of the Franciscan order. The surface of the painting is damaged, but the sonorous language of forms expressing dramatic tension, and the picturesque manner of imaging, chiaroscuro modeling, vivid colors represent the art of Cimabue in which all the achievements of the duscant and the emerging, emerging aspirations simultaneously manifest themselves.
