Nymph Callisto on the chariot of Jupiter by Baldassare Peruzzi

This is one of the frescoes, painted by the artist in the years 1511-1512. on the arches of the former open loggia of the Villa Farnesina in Rome, built and decorated according to the project of Peruzzi. The fragment depicts Callisto, riding in a golden chariot across a starry sky. Two bulls are bringing the chariot, and putts representing the winds look out of the cloud.

There is an assumption that the picture has a certain astrological meaning: the bull means the zodiacal constellation Taurus, rising through the constellation Ursa Major, whose symbol is Callisto.

Complicated astrological scenes are depicted on other parts of the arch, and, as is believed, together they serve as the horoscope of Agostino Chigi, the owner of the villa. Part of the vault painted by Raphael – Fresco Triumph Galatea.
