This fresco is one of those with which Fra Angelico decorated the chapel of Pope Nicholas V at the Vatican. Note that the Roman series of frescoes differs from the series of frescoes, referring to the period of the artist’s work in the monastery of San Marco, his “pedalized” narrative. Comment on the plot of the work.
St. Lawrence, who died in 258, was a Roman priest at the time of the ministry of Sixtus II, that is, in the era of the most terrible persecutions against Christians, inspired by the emperor Valerian. Sixtus himself, with six priests, was killed a few days before the martyrdom of Lavrenty. In the left part of the picture, Lavrenty is depicted as taking from the Sixtus church treasures. The legend says that the saint refused to transfer these treasures to the Roman emperor, instead giving them to the needy – this scene is depicted on the right.
