St. Joseph with the Young Christ by El Greco

Painting of the Spanish artist El Greco “St. Joseph with the young Christ”. The size of the picture is 182 x 89 cm, canvas, oil. Joseph, in the New Testament, betrothed husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of the Savior. He in a straight line came from the family of King David, but was in poverty and, living in a remote Nazareth, engaged in carpentry.

On the life of Joseph, apart from the circumstances of the birth of Christ, little is known, although the apocryphal literature tried to fill this gap. Joseph seems to have died shortly after visiting Jerusalem with a young twelve-year-old Jesus Christ, since he is no longer mentioned in the Bible thereafter. Under the name of Joseph treated a fairly widely known apocryphal gospel: “The story of Joseph carpenter.”
