The painting “Maturation”, dated 1894, is the second version of the canvas, written by Munk eight years before and destroyed during a fire in his workshop. This picture honestly and frankly conveys the awakening sexual feeling, which Munch considered one of the most profound and dangerous experiences that fall to the lot of man. Maturation is a difficult phase of transition from childhood to maturity.
The picture shows a naked young girl, shyly nestled on the edge of the bed. The girl sits in the frontal pose, knees tightly folded and hands folded on them. Certain signs of puberty are outlined by the artist on her body with tenderness and tact.
The look of the girl and the very expression of her face show agitation, expressing fear of the changes taking place in her body. The body and hands of the heroine are striking in their thinness, making her image even more fragile and vulnerable. Hands of the girl shyly covers her pubis – this gesture gives the atmosphere tension. The figure of the heroine is illuminated by the bright spring sun, causing her body to cast a sharp shadow, which seems like a black cloud.
