Men on the beach by Edvard Munch

Men on the beach by Edvard Munch

Naked figures are familiar in the works of Munch. The artist most often depicted a male nude as a completely impassive person, as, for example, in the work Men at the Beach. Another was the attitude of the artist to the nude female nature. The images of this series are extremely emotional, expressing the artist’s complex attitude towards sexuality, which he considered to be one of the deepest foundations of human existence.

For Munch, sex was inextricably linked with jealousy, despair and death, so naked women appear in his paintings as insidious temptresses, or suffering victims, or carriers of unsolved mystery). Note that Munch, unlike many other artists, never admires the beauty of the female body.
