Ash by Edvard Munch

Ash by Edvard Munch

The plot of the picture can be re-told with one Pushkin line: “It’s over: there is no connection between us.”

The artist draws the viewer’s attention to the emotional state of the characters. The man has closed himself from the world, his feelings are deep inside, he is closed both physically and emotionally, the spectator does not immediately notice him. The woman is opposite, in the center of the composition. Her face is full of indifference. Only a slight confusion gives emotional activity.

Interesting place of action. Viewers have associations with the theater stage, the cinema screen. If you carefully examine the details of the picture, you can see the symbolic detail: a small greenish stone, triangular in shape. The stone resembles a theatrical mask with a black wig. Accident or intention? If it is an accident, it is very appropriate. Discarded mask, gap, ash, after a love fire. Red hair and greenish face are signs of a witch in the folklore of many nations. The unbuttoned dress, under which the red linen, gives the plot sharpness and temperament. The orange tones of the background are reminiscent of recent passion, and the dark sky adds gloom.
