A talented artist, a prominent art historian, restorer and educator, Igor Grabar, regarded painting a little from the scientific side, studiously studying new techniques and curious methods. His fascination with Impressionism was also the result of comprehending the popular style that all of Europe, especially France, screamed about.
The picture “March snow” shows an amazing rural landscape. The artist so honestly and accurately managed to depict the mood that it seems as if a fresh frosty air is blowing from the canvas, and the warm rays of the sun are small in magnitude and begin to warm both the earth and the viewer. A woman walks along the trampled road. On her shoulder is a wide rocker with buckets, a tightly tied shawl on her head, a long skirt and a bulky padded jacket save from the cold.
The most remarkable thing about Grabar’s work is the image of the snow, on which falls the shadow of the unseen branchy tree. The nature of the light, the angle of incidence of rays, coloring tells us that it’s getting dark in the street. The snow was written out by the author in short dense strokes, because it was such a snow in the spring – loose, loose, melted. What kind of love and reverence for country life shows us a picture!
A modest house, a long road wandering away, a long road, untouched by footprints of snow flooring – this easy calm landscape can not leave anyone indifferent. And of course the magic image of light, falling on the snow shadows from the tree, the rays of the sun, making their way through the crown – all this creates an extraordinary impression of inexorably coming spring and warmth.
