The series was created by Golbein in the 1520s, but in full form was published only in 1538, in Lyons. The delay was caused by the fact that the Swiss book publisher, who ordered Holbein’s “Dance of Death”, went bankrupt, and after his death, which followed in 1526, the Lyon printing house of the deceased went to the creditors.

The series “Dance of Death” was a huge success, published with signatures in different languages and for a long time was on the list of the most famous European bestsellers.
