
The drawing never occupied an important place in the work of Dake, as in the work of Rubens. Most of the drawings that have come down to us refer to his early years. Later, having switched to portrait painting, van Dyck always wrote directly on the canvas and resorted to preliminary sketches only in exceptional cases. The surviving drawings of Van Dyck are made in various techniques, including chalk, coal, a pen and ink, a pencil.
