At the northwestern foot of Sannodahti hill from the gates of Akasaka Gomon to the gate of Toranomon was a narrow pond of Tamayke, in the form of a pumpkin gorlanka. Surplus water from the pond flowed into Sotobori – the outer moat of the Edodze castle, which was located near the gate of Toranomon. From the Tamaeike pond to the outer side of Toranomon stretched the slope of Aoizak, where the forest mallow grew, hence the name – Aoizak. In this area lived daimyo, so you can see their mansions.
On the right bank of the Outer ditch are the buildings of the oldest Shinto sanctuary of Sanno-jinja. Next to it was a mansion of the Daimyo Kegoku Sadonami, on whose territory stood the shrine of Kompira. Two young men in the foreground, dressed only in loincloths and headscarves, are probably artisans. They carry flashlights with the inscription: “Campina Daigon-gen”. They return after ritual dousing with cold water during the winter months in the shrine of Kompira, which was mandatory during the ten-year apprenticeship training.
As in most prints of the late edition, the color in this sheet turns into a darker and more saturated one. The dark blue band of the boccas, passing in the first version across the canal stream, is now placed in the center of a small waterfall.
