View from the hill of the sanctuary of Tenjin in Yusima by Utagawa Hiroshige

In front of the spectator a winter landscape opens with a view of the pond Sinobadzu no Ike. In the heart of the pond on the island was the sanctuary of Benzaiten – one of the seven gods of happiness. On the right, on the opposite bank, you can see the red buildings of the Kangeiji Temple on Ueno Mountain. The viewer is on a hill, next to the shrine of Yusima Tenjin or Yusima Tammangu, the entrance to which is indicated by the stone gate of the thorium. It is dedicated to the scholar of the Heian period Sugawara no Mitizane, deified in 1478.

The sanctuary was located on a high hill, which could be reached by two ladders. One of them, more sloping, was called onnazaka and led to the entrance to the sanctuary from the side of the pond. Another – more steep – was called otokozaka, it is visible in the engraving on the right in the foreground. Yusima Tenjin was surrounded by a lot of restaurants, tea houses, and entertainment venues. To the left, beyond the gates of the thorium is a roof of a tea house with red lanterns under it. In the later version, the red glow of the sunset at the horizon line gradually turns into blue, and then into a dark blue color. The earliest variant is distinguished by the color of the strip near the top edge of the sheet, it wears a lilac-brown hue.
