From 1207, he subordinated his life to serving the spiritual heritage of Jesus Christ, becoming a preacher. Soon he had followers in Italy and in almost all European countries that organized themselves in the Franciscan fraternity.
He was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1228, at the same time the first portrait of Francis of Assisi was painted in the Italian monastery of Sacro Speko in Subiaco. Novels, poems and legends about St. Francis are collected in an anonymous collection of the late Middle Ages “Flowers of St. Francis of Assisi”.
