Calvary by Edvard Munch

Calvary by Edvard Munch

This picture is an example of two more influences implemented by Munk in an absolutely original manner. We mean, on the one hand, Maurice Denis with his decorative effect, and on the other hand, Fauvism with their elemental dynamics of writing, open color intensity and sharpness of rhythm.

Munch of the time dropped the exact phrase: “I do not write what I see, but what I saw.” This phrase was later picked up by Andre Breton, the leader of future surrealists, who compared Munch’s paintings with flashes of lightning and said about the artist that the deeply tragic perception of life deprived his ability to paint with anything less than what he saw.
