In the summer of 1867, Monet wrote a number of works in the open air at St. Adress, including the Regatta at St. Address and the Beach at St. Address which form a pair. They are the same size, and the viewpoints differ by only a few meters.
Both paintings compare the solar regatta, which is observed by well-dressed citizens at high tide, with a dark scene at low tide, which shows fishing boats stretched out onto a sailor-filled beach and workers.
