This picture was written by the author in the period when his works depended on the emotions and mood of the artist. In his last years he gave preference to melancholic and gloomy tones, which became a reflection of all the disappointments and sorrows of a lonely soul.
The painting depicts the autumn evening. Most of the landscape is a light blue sky, on which you can see gray clouds that look even slightly brighter in relation to the calm, motionless surface of the river. The moon is already hanging in the bright sky, it appeared earlier than its nightly companions of the star. Even the reflection in the river is its vague and unsteady, as if asking, “Didn’t it appear too early?”
In the middle of the picture, the main attributes are yellowed and darkened trees. The rays of a dim sun, which has not yet disappeared over the horizon, illuminate these yellow, red, dark green treetops, bringing a little joy to the picture.
Everything in the picture looks fixed, only slight ripples are seen on the river, where the forest is reflected differently than the moon. It merges into a single thick palette, in which there is yellow and orange colors, and quietly waiting for the onset of the night. Only two completely yellowed trees stand apart, separated from the grove: one is located near the shore, the second is closer to the forest in the distance.
It can not be said that the picture is completely absorbed by autumn melancholy, but still, it causes a little heaviness in the soul. The author tried, without exaggerating the sadness of the landscape, to convey the mood that occurs at least once in every one of this period of the year.
