In the tenth years of the 20th century Cubism appeared on the European art scene. Seeing the work of the Cubists, Bonnard said to his nephew: “I was sent back to school, I am overloaded with color.” Without understanding this, I neglected the form for the sake of color… I need to learn how to write again. “
The result of this study was “Canteen in a country house” which is formally much more complicated than previous works of Bonnard. The color, however, the artist here, too, is not neglected.
