The “dance”, which together with the “Music” constitutes a decorative ensemble, was commissioned by S. I. Shchukin to decorate the stairs of his mansion in Moscow. The motif of the dance, which existed in the art of France in the Renaissance, in Matisse embodies the rhythm and expression of the XX century.
Expressive lines and large planes perfectly convey a sense of shape and dynamics of the figures. Receiving simplification and schematization of figures and space enhances the collision and brightness of the sound of three colors – red, blue and green.
