Yellow Room by Marc Chagall

Yellow Room by Marc Chagall

The painting got its name from the dominant yellow color, which is complemented by shades of contrasting tones – cherry, blue, pink, white.

The viewer’s eyes are presented with the interior of the room, which seems to expand, absorbing the outside world. All items are moved, even walls and floorboards. They seem to loudly declare their existence and ultimately form a new unity.

On one side of the picture is a figure of a smiling woman sitting on a chair, her head turned upside down, and her body is as if oriented outside the picture. On the other hand, a mysterious animal settled down at ease. These figures seem to balance each other. As a result, an ordinary room is completely turned into a philosophical and phantasmagoric image. He demonstrates the irrationality of being, his anxiety, mystery and joy at the same time.
