Whisper II by Paul Gauguin

Whisper II by Paul Gauguin

… A moment is a song of a whisper, Enchanted by history. The moment is you… I. Luzan, “The Moment” The picturesque canvas in the performance of the great Gauguin is dedicated to the quiet and unhurried life of the islanders of French Polynesia. It was written in 1892 and included in the number of eighty paintings of the most fruitful period of the artist’s work. The themes of the paintings of that time were a copy of the life of the Tahitians. It detailed the structure, way of life of the Polynesian villages, narrating about those of whom many of us know only from documentary films.

The place, if we talk specifically about the point of the artist’s stay, is called Papeet – the capital of French Polynesia. Here Gauguin spent a segment of the last years of his life and writing a series of paintings called as works of the Tahitian period. “Whisper” is referred to the category of genre paintings that carry a household overtones. The time that is lit on the canvas, most likely, lunch, when the islanders are given a quiet siesta and rest. Red sand became for a group of inhabitants a kind corner of a warm monastery.

Here are scattered pieces of stones and yellow dry grass. The author endowed the plot with the necessary heat of the sun and the shadow of massive trees. In a word, this is a cozy village corner with a simple landscape and houses of dry rattan. Unlike Russian settlements, Papeet is a very clean and well-groomed corner.

The architecture and layout of the village lives in unison with nature, emphasizes and merges with its beauty. In his work, Gauguin paid much attention to warm colors and smooth writing of the details. The absence of chaos of smears and dynamics, characteristic of impressionism, reflected the picture in a calm rhythm, thereby artificially emphasizing the peace and quiet of the village landscape. The composition “Whisper” is built on the basis of multi-layered plans. In this case, one finds the other. See for yourself, the girl in the foreground, as the main character, is located aside from the center. Its “boundaries” violate the second plan with a handful of villagers under a tree.

The third plan is a rural landscape with a house, – peeps out from behind the crown of a medium-sized tree. Like a layered loaf, the picture is tied into a single tasty whole, while having a strict structure. Perfectly chosen colors in the canvas. And in fact, they seem to whisper about the spices, the calm mood of dry air with the taste of the salt of the Pacific Ocean. This is a complicated hot palette of amaranth and buffalo skin color, orange burnt spots and a herb of green tea. Only the azure edge of the sky enlivens a set of “seasonings” from Paul Gauguin.
