Venus in the forge of Vulcan by France Floris

Frans Floris is a famous Dutch painter and engraver of the 16th century. In many works of the artist there is an orientation to the work of Italian Mannerists, as well as the achievements of art by Michelangelo, J. Vasari, J. Romano. The artist was born in Antwerp, his father was a sculptor, and his older brother – a sculptor and architect. Frans Floris studied painting in Liege from L. Lombardi and in 1540 became a master of the guild of painters in Antwerp.

In his native city, he worked all his life, only in 1542-1547 he lived in Italy, where he was carried away by the painting of Miche-Landsgelo. Returning to Antwerp, Floris painted a large number of paintings on religious, mythological subjects, as well as many portraits. Among the works written in this period is the painting “Venus in the forge of Vulcan”, which has all the characteristic features of the artist’s artistic method: the desire for pathetic and dynamic, love for complex angles, for the image of athletic nudes. At the same time, the artist uses soft chiaroscuro, exquisite nuances of color, giving his images vitality and immediacy.

Other famous works: “The overthrow of the rebellious angels.” 1554. Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp; “The Last Judgment.” 1565. Museum of Art History, Vienna; “Portrait of a Falconer”. 1558. Museum of the Duke Anton Ulrich, Braunschweig.
