In his painting “Ukrainian Night” AI Kuindzhi depicts a rural landscape. The picture, as if divided into several different colored pieces. In the lower and upper part – darkness, to the left – a blue piece of the sky, and to the right – the yellow light of the moon.
At first glance, it seems that nothing is visible on the bottom of the picture – everything is hidden by the dusk of the night. But, having carefully scrutinized, you can see a small meandering river, on one side of which stretch the vast expanses of fields. On the other hand, among the wildly growing reeds, the stately poplars rose upwards, gleaming with their white trunks. Here and there you can see the outlines of growing grasses and shrubs. On a small hillock there are Ukrainian huts. The moon very picturesquely illuminates several houses and a path in front of them.
There is a feeling that among this whole darkness of the night, among the dark forces, there is still salvation, which came in the form of Divine illumination in color. As if the Lord God himself sent this majestic light of the moon.
The sky, bizarrely divided into two bands, looks frightening and a little menacing. On the dark side of it, here and there, like tiny fireflies, the stars are burning. The blue and black areas of the sky seem to come into conflict with each other, and the viewer can only guess who will win. There is a feeling that there is good and evil.
The author managed to convey quite naturally the whole gamut of shades and colors.
