Island of Love by Jean Honore Fragonard

Landscapes Fragonard wrote no worse than playful figurative compositions. The work of the artist in this genre is usually divided into two main groups. The first include romantic Italian views, inspired by their author, the beautiful gardens of Villa d’Este in Tivoli. This includes his “Holiday in Rambouillet” and a beautiful oil landscape “The Great Cascade in Tivoli”, 1760.

The second group consists of landscapes written in the traditions of Dutch painting of the 17th century, which was very popular in France at the time of Fragonard. Works of old Dutch artists the artist could see in the Paris exhibition halls and private collections of his customers. In this manner, in particular, the strangely-agitated landscape “Love Island” is written, where Fragonard portrayed the Mediterranean “island of the goddess Venus” – Kiefer, Cyprus.
