This wonderful portrait dates back to the time when Polenov intensively “sorted out” genres, trying to find his way in art. He did not become a portrait painter, this work stands apart in his work.
But the choice of “material” opens up some intimate interests of the artist; later they expressed themselves in the enthusiasm of the Old Russian culture as part of the activities of the Abramtsevo artistic circle.
