“The Return of the Hunters” is one of a series of paintings devoted to individual months. Beginning of such series, recall, put the illustrated medieval calendars, and in the scene depicted by Brueghel, the influence of the miniatures of the “Richest chapel” of the Duke of Berry is still felt. Here, however, nature – is not only the environment for human activities, but also the main content of the picture.
Men and women, immersed in their usual seasonal cares, are something accidental in the majestic annual cycle of dying and rebirth, fanned by the living breathing of the rhythm of the cosmos.
