The Plane Alley by Vincent Van Gogh

The Plane Alley by Vincent Van Gogh

In the spring of 1888 in the work of Van Gogh there is a new splash. The long-awaited warmth that allowed the artist to go to the open-air, new hopes and plans related to the move to Arles – all this was reflected in his painting, filling it with bright emotions, sonorous color combinations, new ideas and fresh motives.

The spring landscapes of the Arles period are full of unusual life force. In the “Platano alley” the main hero of the canvas is the sun. Its rays are illuminated by trees planted along an even row, and their trunks and branches begin to play bright ocher and yellow highlights against the background of an unusually blue spring sky.

The composition of the picture is closed, because the author first tried to convey the effects of spring lighting on large trunks of plane trees. But the artist also conveyed the depth of the landscape, reinforcing the linear perspective of the air. The spring sky seems to paint the bridge with the composition on the background in the bright blue color.

The coolish green color of the grass turns into a game of warm ocher, brown and red hues in the foreground. Large smooth strokes create the effect of colorful mosaic. All this fills the landscape with air, helping to convey the light state of the awakening nature.
