The Battle of Anghiari by Leonardo da Vinci

The Battle of Anghiari by Leonardo da Vinci

An amazing embodiment of the long-lost battle in the centuries – “The Battle of Anghiari” brush of the brilliant Da Vinci, unfortunately, is forever lost to art. Today we can only be comforted by a copy of the cardboard prepared for this fresco, which Rubens did, but it also gives a clear idea of the magnificence of the fresco. This was the most grandiose project of the great artist – the completed fresco was supposed to surpass the size of the “Last Supper”.

Order came from Gonfalonera Soderini, who invited Leonardo and Michelangelo to decorate the main hall of his palace – each artist was entrusted with one wall. Da Vinci remembered the battle of 1440 between the forces of Florentines and Milanese, and conceived this large-scale project, the sketch to which has already been declared the greatest achievement of painting. Innovation was in everything – and in the depiction of actors, both in composition and in technology.

It is still not clear whether Leonardo finished his work, but the active search for a unique fresco was conducted over the centuries, and reached its apogee in the 2000s, when the Italian art critic Seracini discovered a cavity in the wall of the hall of the Soderini palace, which depicts the fresco of Vasari. The search for 2012 did not give unambiguous answers, and the Italian authorities forbade them to continue, in order to save the fresco of Vasari.
