Terrace in Jacobs Restaurant in Ninstedten on the Elbe by Max Lieberman

Despite the fact that Max Lieberman in 1870 – realizes his dream and arrives in Paris, settling down in Montmartre, the master could not become “his own” among fashionable French artists. Someone blames the character of the artist, someone has Jewish roots. In any case, very soon, Lieberman depressed leaves the city, where he so sought, having run away from his parents, who did not approve of his son’s professional choice. However, Lieberman could not help absorbing the fascination with impressionism that prevailed at that time in Paris, and the picture presented confirms this.

The work was written in 1902 by the order of Alfred Likhtvark, much later than the “French” period of the master, but as it is clearly visible in her impressionistic technique – a bright joyful palette, bright colors, filigree transmission of sunlight breaking through the dense foliage of trees, elegant public, virtuosity transfer the game of light in color! Such a writing of figures in the open air, flooded with light will become the favorite method of the artist, to whom he will turn more than once.

The green alley, which is receding into the distance, is animated by people – someone is walking slowly and their figures in lush dresses are visible from behind the trees, and someone settled with the children at the tables of the coastal cafe. Most of all, the work attracts the unique landscape, striking in its freshness and picturesqueness: the incredible beauty of the greenery, the road in the sun’s glare, the free and at the same time cozy atmosphere.

Currently, the picture can be seen in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg.
