Sunset in Montmazure by Vincent Van Gogh

Sunset in Montmazure by Vincent Van Gogh

The painting “Sunset in Montmazyre” Van Gogh wrote during his stay in the south of France, in the most fruitful period of his work. At that time he constantly wrote landscapes from nature. During one of the summer walks, the artist discovered a rocky terrain, overgrown with heather, small oaks and bushes. At sunset, this corner of nature played with shades of gold, reflecting the sun’s rays.

Van Gogh hastened to reflect the beauty of what he saw in the new picture. He showed a clear sunset sky, painted with the colors of the setting sun. Golden, pink and purple sparks of light play and shimmer, coloring leaves and grass in warm tones. In the distance a thin strip of horizon and a wheat field turn blue, and on the left one can see the contours of the buildings of the Abbey of Montmazur.

In the foreground, Van Gogh houses two young, curved trees, the transparent foliage of which reflects the sun’s rays and the lilac shades of the sky. All the greenery in the picture sparkles with an infinite number of warm colors, which so impressed and inspired the artist. The landscape looks romantic and noble, it reflects with utmost attention the evening atmosphere.

It should be noted that for a long time this picture was considered not belonging to Van Gogh’s brush. Its authenticity was established only in 2013 as a result of a thorough examination.
