Stone Age by Victor Vasnetsov

Stone Age by Victor Vasnetsov

Vasnetsov managed to portray the life of ancient people very realistically. He shows their daily activities such as: hunting, feasting, ritual actions.

The artist painted a bunch of people, all of them in loincloths. Their hair is rasped. Their bodies are swarthy and muscular. In the center stands the leader. He is the tallest and strongest of men. His face is stern, and his hands hold arms. The rest are sitting around. A woman repairs clothes, other men sharpen their spears, and one of the hunters even aims from the bow in flying birds.

Several people drink from clay pots, and some just sit, as if playing a game. Still in the picture there is a child. This is a boy who is surprised to observe the actions of the old man. A gray-haired old man sharpens a stick. The panel is written in oil.

Vasnetsov specifically did not use bright colors to make everything look natural. Brown, beige, white – all these colors the artist took from nature itself. Vasnetsov very carefully thought through every movement of the heroes. He consulted with historians, art historians, archaeologists. Eventually. he managed to convey the atmosphere of the ancient world. The painting “Stone Age” can be considered really one of the most authentic, from the historical point of view, pictures.
