In the painting of Baldung, this last side of his work takes over. His main painting work is the large multi-leaf altar of the cathedral in Freiburg, still relatively quiet, with a symmetrically constructed middle section completely devoid of spatiality and overloaded with figures.
Strong side of painting Baldunga – sparkling, burning colors that merge into bright, saturated color chords. Typical of most of his paintings are the quaintness of the composition, the increased expression of figures, the emphatic expressiveness of gestures in the works of the last twenty years of his life, such as “The Beating of St Stephen”, 1522, Strasbourg; “Two witches”, 1523, Frankfurt; “Allegory of vanity,” 1529, grow into an open mannerisms.
