Monet loved Arzhantey. A lot of good and sad things in the artist’s life are connected with this place. For seven years he lived in the suburbs of Paris, which is Arzhantey, with his family and did not yet know that the last, 1878, would be a farewell for him, both with the place and with his dear wife who passed away in September 1879. In the meantime, Claude Monet lives almost carelessly. He writes a lot in the open air of the landscapes of Argenteuil, houses, the Seine with its inconstancy, gardens.
Presented painting “Regatta in Arzhantey” was one of many on the topic of sailing competitions. Each of these works has its own character, colors, nature of performance and emotions. This “Regatta” – the very calm and grace. It is quiet, frozen in anticipation of its beginning. On the watery smooth surface, the river runs into the coast with large rectangular waves. Its purity blinds the eyes and reflects the landscape like a mirror.
The canvas is divided into two worlds – reality and the “looking-glass”. And that which is vaguely reflected in water is written abruptly and sharply. However, this world is no less bright and juicy, just as vain, and life boils in it is just as interesting. Departing from the impressions caused by the plot, I want to work on the analysis of the web. It is written in the framework of the established rules of impressionism. There are a lot of rich colors, both pure and mixed with each other. No black spots and a hint of soot.
All shadows and halftones are obtained by combining spectral hues. The picture does not carry a special meaning, which also does not contradict the idea of impressionism – to write what you feel. The composition of the picture is divided into two horizontal components.
Moreover, the foreground is water, it is one of the parts of the picture, and also the landscape of the upper part seems to be equivalent. The palette of work has a different temperature, but in general it seems warm, thanks to the muted blue paint with ocher strokes. “Regatta in Arzhantey” – a canvas filled, well compiled, easy to read and refers to the landscape painting of the impressionist Monet.
